If you still have questions, please feel free to contact us

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a type of healthcare that helps individuals of all ages develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed for everyday tasks and activities. OTs work with individuals who may have physical, sensory, cognitive, or emotional challenges, helping them improve their ability to perform daily tasks, like dressing, eating, working, or playing.

What does Occupational Therapy treat?

OT can treat a wide range of issues, including:

  • Physical disabilities (e.g., stroke, arthritis, traumatic injury)
  • Developmental delays (e.g., autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder)
  • Cognitive impairments (e.g., memory loss, executive function challenges)
  • Mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression)
  • Motor coordination issues (e.g., fine motor skills, handwriting difficulties)
  • Sensory processing issues (e.g., hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to stimuli)

OT helps individuals engage in meaningful activities (or "occupations"), regardless of the challenges they face.

What does a typical session look like?

A typical OT session generally lasts1 hour. It begins with a brief check-in where we discuss progress, challenges, or changes in goals. The session then includes engaging activities, such as fine or gross motor exercises, sensory-based tasks, or cognitive activitities, depending on the individual's needs. The therapist will provide guidance, encouragement, and hands-on assistance as needed, and the session will end with a recap of what was achieved and recommendations for home practice.

Do you work with both children and adults?

Yes, we work with both children and adults. Our pediatric services focus on helping children develop and enhance their skills for daily living, play, school, and socialization. For adults, we address issues like injury recovery, work-related tasks, or adapting to life changes due to illness or disability.

How do you assess my/my child’s needs?

The assessment process begins with a thorough evaluation, which may include interviews, standardized tests, observations, and caregiver or teacher reports. We may also assess motor skills, cognitive abilities. For children we also look at sensory processing, emotional responses. We’ll review any relevant medical or developmental history and work together with you to identify specific goals. Based on the findings, we create a customized treatment plan tailored to address the unique needs of the individual.

How long will I/my child need Occupational Therapy?

The length of therapy varies depending on the individual’s needs and progress. For some, therapy may be short-term (a few weeks to months), while others may require ongoing support. The therapist will regularly assess progress toward goals, and the plan can be adjusted as needed. In some cases, therapy might be a longer-term commitment, particularly for chronic conditions or developmental delays. We will work closely with you to determine the appropriate duration.

What should I/my child wear to Occupational Therapy sessions?

It’s best to wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement.

What is needed at home for services?

At home, it's important to create a space where your child can engage in activities without distractions. Depending on the type of therapy, you may need specific equipment or tools (e.g., sensory toys, therapy balls, special seating) that we can recommend. We'll also provide strategies or activities to practice at home to reinforce skills developed during therapy sessions.

Do you work with my child’s school or my/my child’s other healthcare providers?

Yes, with your permission, we collaborate with your child's school and other healthcare providers (e.g., pediatricians, speech therapists, physical therapists) to ensure a holistic approach to therapy. We often work with teachers and school staff to integrate therapeutic strategies into your child's daily routine, and we provide them with recommendations to support progress in the school environment.

Is Occupational Therapy covered by insurance?

In many cases, yes—occupational therapy is covered by most health insurance plans, including Medicaid and private insurance, though the specifics can vary. It's important to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage and any requirements (e.g., referrals, prior authorizations) for OT services.

Will you assist me with getting reimbursed by my insurance company?

Connected OT is an out of network provider. Payments are submitted directed to Connected OT and we will provide you with a fully coded invoice to submit to your insurance provider.
